The Best Communities for Web3 Builders

You’ve probably seen the hashtags 100daysof web3 or seen people's bios with communities they belong to in them. In this article, I mention 10 communities that should be on your radar if you are a builder or developer in web3. These communities are also very beginner-friendly so you can join even if you've never written a line of code.

Here are the 10 communities you need to check out today: (Unless expressly mentioned, these communities are free to join and would help you with learning, building, earning, and networking)

1. Women Build Web 3 (WBW3)

As the name states, WomenBuildWeb3 is the community for women and non-binary builders in web3 and is a spin-off from developer DAO. Whether you are a web2 dev looking to transition to web3 or a tech beginner, this DAO will help you learn, build and earn in web3.

Screenshot 2022-05-01 161647.png In just one week, WomenBuildWeb3 was able to form a combined group of around 30 women and non-binary people to compete in the Web3con hackathon. This group ultimately formed 6 individual teams comprised of people from 8 countries. All six teams built a web3 project and each builder received a $1000 grant for their contributions. Three of the teams also won hackathon prizes for their submitted projects.

WomenBuildWeb3 plans to send members to 10 hackathons this year so that people can experience hands-on learning and building in the web3 space. Needless to say, this community is one to keep an eye on!

Applications to the DAO are currently closed but will be opened soon. If you are interested in learning more about the DAO, be sure to follow their Twitter and keep an eye out for their upcoming #30daysofweb3 challenge starting in May. This challenge aims to teach participants about web3 technologies within just 30 days. By the end of the challenge, participants will have built a working web3 application.

2. Developer DAO

If you’re a developer who's active on Twitter, there's a high chance you’ve already heard about this community. They also recently organized the Web3con conference and hackathon.

Developer DAO is a community for people interested in learning and contributing to the future of web3. As you'd expect by the name, there’s a huge developer presence in this community. The community currently has several web3 projects in progress and there are many projects looking for more contributors! This is a great way to get hands-on experience and learn. Mentorship is also available for its members.

Screenshot 2022-05-01 161744.png Even if you’re not a developer, there's still a lot you can do and learn from this community. Developer DAO has guilds (subcommunities) for members its members. These guilds include the Design Guild, Marketing Guild, Writing Guild and Community Guild. They also have an active community for women and non-binary people within the DAO. They’ve had several members land web3 jobs recently, so you might want to check them out here. You can also check out their Twitter and newly-launched podcast.

Screenshot 2022-05-01 160514.png You need to purchase an NFT to join this community, but you can also apply for a scholarship. If accepted for the scholarship, you will receive the Developer DAO NFT for free. This NFT acts as an access pass to parts of the discord.

3. The Graph

The Graph is a web3 protocol for indexing and querying blockchain data with GraphQL but they also have the largest community of subgraph developers, indexers, and curators. Joining the graph forum or discord community will give you access to learning resources, support and grants as you learn and build subgraphs or applications.

There are also a lot of other communities within the graph such as Graphica which is the home of the Graph in Africa and has a lot of initiatives for web3 talent to learn and grow. There's also the graph advocates DAO which drives growth within the graph ecosystem through community grants and the graph advocates program, applications are currently open and you can apply here.

4. Buildspace

With 44,000 members, Buildspace is the largest DAO for web3 developers and is also known for its web3 tutorials and job marketplace. From learning solidity and building your first web3app to building a DAO with just JavaScript or building multiple projects with Solana or Polygon, Buildspace has you covered.

The learning is done in cohorts with detailed tutorials and an active discord community which provides support and programming help. If interested, you can join here. Speaking of their discord, there are channels specifically made for each project from their curriculum, as well as subcommunities within Buildspace. Some active ones are Buildspace India which held its first IRL event recently and Buildspace women which is launching a 2-week solidity bootcamp in May.

5. Learn Web3 Dao

LearnWeb3DAO has created one of the most detailed and beginner-friendly curriculums on web3 development. Their curriculum takes you from the basics of programming with JavaScript to building advanced applications with Solidity, covering everything else in-between during the process.

Screenshot 2022-05-01 160330.png More than just a curriculum, LearnWeb3DAO also has an active community that does live pair coding sessions regularly, hosts Twitter spaces on important career topics, and has a lot of fun with giveaways and more. It’s free to join and all you have to do is sign up here or just go through their curriculum and join the discord.

6. Blu3DAO

Did you hear about the all-women team that won the ETH Amsterdam hackathon? This particular team of builders was sent to the ETH Amsterdam conference by Blu3DAO!

Blu3DAO aims to empower women and non-binary people to earn, learn and play in the web3 space. Some of the ways they do this are through mentorship, community endeavors and sponsorships/scholarships.

Feel free to hop into their discordto learn more about them or check out their Twitter here

7. Surge Women

Surge women just launched one of the best NFTs that I have seen in this space called the Surge Passport.

This NFT gives you access to a lot of training, grants, workshops and opportunities from organizations that Surge is partnered with. Some of the perks of this NFT include: free access to a 5-day camp from Decentology to learn how to build dApps on the Hyperverse, a scholarship to Kernel, Access to Consensys bootcamp and more.

The surge passport public sale of their NFT started yesterday and you can mint your NFT with this link. There's also the option to gift the Surge passport directly to a friends wallet which is a great way to support any woman you know.

You can also join their discord even without and NFT and keep up with the community on twitter.

8. Her DAO

This is a women-led DAO for developers that cham[ions innovation and diversity in the web 3 space. Supported by harmony protocol, they help womxn to learn and grow by providing them opportunities to learn and build. They also provide sponsorships to travel for hackathons and have sent members to multiple hackathons this year.

They currently have a Bootcamp ongoing and other learning initiatives from the DAO and their partners, if you’re interested in learning more about them, you can join the community here or keep up with their updates on their Twitter account.

Screenshot 2022-05-01 160034.png Have you ever gotten paid to take a tutorial and ship a project? Because that's literally what Pointer does. They create cool and informative tutorials that reward users with crypto and NFTs upon completion. Some tutorials they've created include, 'Building an NFT marketplace with ThirdWeb', 'Creating a payments platform with Polygon' and a tutorial on Solana Pay

They recently launched a bounties program that allows developers to earn for completing projects and solving problems. Check out Pointer here.

10. #100DaysofWeb3

This is not exactly a community like the other ones I mentioned, but it's a great way to build in public and get your work and name in front of the web3 community. By consistently uploading daily updates on the technologies and tools you are learning to use, you will gain support from others who are participating. This challenge allows you to document your progress publicly and hold yourself accountable, which will be helpful on your developer journey and in landing a job.. You can read more about this here and also check out #100days of code.

Finally, there are several protocols and web3 companies that, similar to The Graph, have their communities built to foster interactions, provide support to people that build with their tools or platforms, give out grants and drive learning initiatives. Some of the really helpful communities you can check out are Polygon, Alchemy, Nervos, Decentology and Chainlink especially if you plan to build with their tools or hope to work with them.
